Math Department Unix Frequently Asked Questions

  1. I'm told I'm over quota, but I don't know how to get under quota.

The command clean-acct is available on hans to help users. When run, it will interactively suggest ways in which you save space in your account, such as compressing or deleting old files, large files, Netscape caches, and other suggestions.

  2. Can I undelete a file?

In some cases, yes. See Deleting Files for more detailed information.

  3. The following message appears when I use the mail editor: "Mailer is unable to obtain exclusive access to this mailbox because the system is not responding."

From the mailer menu, select "Mailbox", then "Options", then "Advanced". One of the checkboxes will read "Use network aware mail file locking". If this is checked off, uncheck it, click "OK", then exit and restart the mailer.

  4. I log in and get "SPARC_EDITOR: Undefined variable".

Look in your .editor-csh file. Check to see if there is a line in the file:

    setenv SPARC_EDITOR editor-name

If this line either does not exist or is commented out (line begins with '#') for the particular type of login (X/terminal), it must be added.
