YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS: Your email address isusername@math.upenn.edu where username is your own userid on our server.TO RECEIVE AND SEND EMAIL:
- If you use elm, pine, or mutt, one possibility is just login to mail.sas.upenn.edu using your hans.math password . Use secure login (ssh or equivalent such as SecureCRT or Datacomet secure) just as when logging in to hans.math.
- For remote access to your email from home etc, many email programs, including Firefox, KMail, Mutt, and Pine, can be configured to use access email directly on their local computer -- and then don't need to login to mail.sas in a terminal window. we recommend using IMAP rather than the older POP mail protocol (see the description in IMAP-vs-POP).
If you use Netscape, Eudora, Firefox, etc. you will need to configure your email software for both receiving and sending email.
Protocol Server Name Comment IMAP (one of the incoming server types) imap.sas.upenn.edu Mail stored largely on mail.sas; recommended for most users. POP (one of the incoming server types) pop.sas.upenn.edu Mail downloaded to local machine. SMTP (=outgoing mail server) smtp.sas.upenn.edu NOTE: Another SMTP server may have to be used when off campus, depending on ISP being used. Please see here for more information.
For additional configuration instructions for various email clients, please see here.See http://www.math.upenn.edu/Help/migration/ for some details. You might also find some of University of Chicago configuration and IMAP documentation useful: http://support.uchicago.edu/docs/mail/imap/
- From any Internet Browser (such as in an airport) you can always use WebMail. Select "mail.sas" from the drop-down server menu. (Webmail is also accessible from the bottom of the Math. Dept. "Home Page"; click on "WebMail" then select "mail.sas" from the drop-down server menu.) WebMail works directly with the copy of your email on our server.
- You may wish to configure your mail program to add automatically the "Reply-To: " mail header so when someone replies to your message it is sent to you @math.upenn.edu. This is not essential since mail sent to you @sas.upenn.edu comes to the same mailbox.
SPAM FILTER:
- We strongly advise you to activate the spam filter on mail.sas. We recommend the "HIGH" setting. To activate the spam filter service as well as manage other aspects of your account after migration, use the URL https://www.sas.upenn.edu/accounts/
- After activation the caught spam is saved in the file "caught-spam" in your personal mail directory on mail.sas (the default name of this directory is "Mail"). It should be checked regularly in case it catches something you do not regard as "spam". Beware: the old caught spam file is deleted automatically every three weeks. If the spam filter regularly catches something it should not catch, you can customize the filter to change its behavior. See http://www.math.upenn.edu/Help/migration/procmailrc.html
EMAIL ADDRESSES OF OTHERS:
- All email addresses, particularly to groups such as "faculty" and "grad" should be "complete", else they will not work.
Examples:faculty ==> faculty@math.upenn.edu grad ==> grad@math.upenn.edu manager ==> manager@math.upenn.eduThe simplest way to automate this is to use the short names as your personal aliases by the program(s) you uses to send email.
MAIL QUOTA: The default absolute mail quota on mail.sas is 20MB. However before you get to that limit you receive warnings etc. For more (essential!) details see http://www.sas.upenn.edu/computing/help/Server/quota_all.html QUESTIONS?

- For specific questions send mail to: manager@math.upenn.edu.
To get a faster response it is wise to state:
1). What operating system (XP, Mac, Linux, ...) is on the computer.
2). What email program (elm, pine, Eudora, ...) you are using.- Read the general article Understanding Email. This discusses POP, IMAP, WebMail, etc., giving comparisons, with virtues, and defects.
