Mathematical Fiction Book Report

Math 170 Midterm Paper

Instructions

Choose one book from the MathFiction list below and write a 3-4 page book report. You must sign up for a book before October 1st. My intent is to have each student read a different book, so please check the list of taken titles below; you cannot sign up for any of these.

Some items you must cover in your review:
- is the Math in the book genuine or fake? I expect you to check the topics and facts covered in the book.
- how central is Mathematics to this book?
- would you recommend that Professor Leidy and I read this book?

The paper should be written in English and typed; no handwritten papers, please. You must include the book as one of your references, and you are welcome to use other references as well. All references should be properly documented. However, merely collecting other readers' comments on the book (from amazon.com or other places) will earn you an F on the paper. Grammar and spelling will count.

The paper is due Friday, October 20th, at noon, in Alina's office.

The List of Math Fiction

Here is a list of Math novels, courtesy of Professor Kasman at the College of Charleston. You can find most of these books at the Penn Library, at the Philadelphia Free Library or at various bookstores. Please support your local independent bookstores!

Professor Kasman would also appreciate your rating of the book you choose, as well as any comments you might want to make. Please use the feedback link on his site to submit your comments.
