Sample Math Majors

The following are sample math majors, organised by what the student is interested in. These are meant as representative examples only--they are not ``tracks".

preparation for graduate study in mathematics

This student has had single-variable calculus in high school and plans to go on to graduate study in mathematics. She takes two math courses per semester, meets all the requirements, and is able to take several graduate courses as well.

  1. MATH 116: Honors Calculus II
  2. MATH 260: Honors Calculus III
  3. MATH 508: Analysis I, MATH 502: Algebra I
  4. MATH 509: Analysis II, MATH 503: Algebra II
  5. MATH 410: Complex Analysis, MATH 350: Number Theory
  6. MATH 425: Partial Differential Equations, MATH 420: Ordinary Differential Equations
  7. MATH 600: Geometric Analysis and Topology I, MATH 608: Complex Analysis
  8. MATH 601: Geometric Analysis and Topology II, MATH 610: Functional Analysis

preparation for graduate study in mathematics

This student took honors calculus because he was thinking of continuing in math beyond the BA. 502 and 503 are recommended instead of 370 and 371 for this purpose, but as a sophomore the student wasn't sure he was up to it. After 299 (introduction to research), he did a summer research project and became more serious about graduate school. Taking 602 in the senior year partially made up for taking 370-1 instead of 502-3.

  1. MATH 116: Honors Calculus II
  2. MATH 260: Honors Calculus III
  3. MATH 370: Algebra I, MATH 410: Complex Analysis
  4. MATH 371: Algebra II, MATH 299: Introduction to Research
  5. MATH 508: Analysis I
  6. MATH 509: Analysis II, MATH 425: Partial Differential Equations
  7. MATH 546: Probability , MATH 602: Algebra I
  8. MATH 547: Stochastic Processes, MATH 603: Algebra II

economics double major

This student wants to double-major in economics. He uses two ECON courses as mathematics cognates to fulfil his mathematics electives.

  1. MATH 104: Calculus I
  2. MATH 114: Calculus II, MATH 203: Proving Things in Algebra
  3. MATH 240: Calculus III, MATH 370: Algebra I
  4. MATH 241: Calculus IV, MATH 371: Algebra II
  5. MATH 360: Advanced Calculus I, STAT 430: Probability
  6. MATH 361: Advanced Calculus II
  7. MATH 340: Discrete Mathematics I, ECON 221: Econometric Forecasting
  8. ECON 222: Advanced Econometric Techniques and Applications

physics double major

This student wants to double-major in physics. Note that some physics classes do count as cognates.

  1. MATH 104: Calculus I
  2. MATH 114: Calculus II, MATH 202: Proving Things in Analysis
  3. MATH 240: Calculus III, MATH 360: Advanced Calculus I
  4. MATH 241: Calculus IV, MATH 361: Advanced Calculus II
  5. MATH 370: Algebra I, STAT 430: Probability
  6. MATH 371: Algebra II, MATH 313: Computational Linear Algebra
  7. MATH 420: Ordinary Differential Equations
  8. MATH 465: Differential Geometry
