- Calculus, 5th edition, by James Stewart
- Functions of several variables, vector-valued functions, partial
derivatives and applications, double and triple integrals,
conic sections, polar coordinates, vectors and analytic geometry,
first and second order ordinary differential equations.
Applications to physical sciences. Use of symbolic manipulation
and graphics software in Calculus.
The math department course webpage has a more detailed description, as well as practice final exams from previous years.
- Quizzes: 20%
- Three midterms: 40%
- Final: 40%
-
There will be weekly quizzes during the recitations, which will count for 20% of the final grade. No make up quizzes will be allowed, but the lowest two quiz grades will be dropped from computing the average.
- You are allowed to bring a "cheat sheet" to the exams, a regular size sheet of paper with handwritten formulas on both sides. No calculators are permitted on the exams.
- First midterm: Thursday, Feb.1, in class--covers Chapters 13, 14
--Midterm I review problems from the
textbook
--Midterm I Solutions
- Second midterm: Thursday, March 1, in class--covers Chapter 15, and
sections 16.1--16.3
--Review problems: Here are some
review problems I selected from the textbook,
mostly among odd numbered problems. In addition, here are some practice
problems with solutions, taken from old exams: Practice
1, Practice 2
--Midterm II Solutions. Note
that the order of the problems may be different from that in your exam.
- Third Midterm: Thursday, Apr. 12, in class--Covers Sec. 16.4-16.9
and 10.1-10.7
--Format: The midterm is going to be a multiple
choice test, with no partial credit given. Guessing is allowed, but you
still have to show your work on the exam booklet.
--Review problems: The following problems are
taken from old exams given at a different institution.
--For Sec. 16.4-16.9: Practice 1 (Solutions); Practice
2 (Solutions); Practice 3 (incl. solutions); Practice 4 (incl. solutions); Practice 5--ex. 6,7,8 only (Solutions).
--For Sec. 10.1-10.7: Practice 6, omit ex. 8, 9, 11, 12 (Solutions)
--For more practice problems, you
can look at the final exams from
previous years, and do the relevant problems for this midterm.
--Office hours: The week of the exam I will have office hours as follows: Tue 4:30-5:30 pm, Wed 1-3pm
--Midterm III Solutions. Note that the order of the problems may be different from that in your exam.
- Final: Thursday, May 3rd, 12-2PM, in Meyerson Hall

- Although you will not be graded for the homework, it is practically impossible to do well in the course without working out the homework assignments regularly. You are encouraged to work together on the assignments.
- You are responsible for
reading the sections from the textbook the week they are covered in
class. During lectures, I may emphasize some parts of the reading and
occasionally omit other parts that I consider more straightforward,
but you are responsible for all the reading.
