We will use the basic syllabus that the math department has for
Math 114. You can check it online at:
Textbook and Syllabus
We'll try to cover one section every hour, but depending on
the length and difficulty of the topics, we'll adjust the schedule as
necessary. Our main goal is to understand the material as well as
possible, and by the 2nd of July to be comfortable with the topics
included in the syllabus and to be able to solve multivariable
calculus problems.
As far as the final grades are concerned, I'll
try to use the usual rule of even distributing the grades: 30%A's,
30%B's, etc. However, as this is a small class,
this distribution is flexible, and depending on your
overall performance I can adjust it to better reflect you performance in the class.
Please do not be afraid to ask any questions, as you are coming to
classes to learn the subject. Also, if my notations are sometimes
confusing, feel free to stop me and ask for clarification.
I
strongly encourage you to send me emails regarding any difficulties
you may encounter when solving homework problems. I will certainly
read all of them, however I will not answer to every email that I
get. Instead I may send some group emails whenever I feel it is
necessary, and also I will try to answer some of the questions during
class time.
PLEASE do correct me every time you think I am making
a mistake. Maybe you will not be right, but it will certainly help
you clarify things. Moreover, the other colleagues may not notice if
I make a mistake, so you would also help them.
Probably most of
you use a cell phone, just as I do. However, please turn it off
during class time, as I wouldn't like to have unwanted pauses during
the lecture. I may even reserve the right to answer any phone
calls received during the class, and I'm sure you wouldn't like me to
answer your phone calls. Thanks in advance...
I will assign homework after every lecture. I will NOT collect the homeworks, but I strongly encourage you to do all the problems. Solving problems is the only way to get a good understanding of the topics covered and I strongly recommend to do all the assigned homework if you want to do well in this class.
We will have four quizzes on May 28th, June 4th, June 18th, and
June 25th. Each will be around 15minutes long.
There will also be
one midterm and one final exam. The midterm will be a one hour
cumulative exam, held in class on Thursday June 11th.
The final
will be two hours long, more details about it will be posted on my
webpage closer to 2nd of July, the date when we're going to have it.
My office hours are scheduled as follows: W 4-6 . If you cannot attend either of them, please contact me by email right away, and I'll try to figure out something else. Last but not least, consider coming at least 15 minutes before the office hours are over, in order to give me some time to answer your questions; otherwise, the answer to the questions might(and most probably will) be delayed until the following office hour takes place.
Quizzes 30%
Midterm 30%
Final 40%.
