Exam Rules
The following rules apply to all of the exams.
0. You are permitted to have one page of notes:
one-sided (on the final you are allowed doulble-sided)
8 1/2" by 11"
handwritten (typed or photocopied not allowed)
Be prepared to turn your notes in with your exam if asked.
1. No books.
2. No calculators, laptops, PDAs, cell phones, or mp3 players.
3. Sign the cover sheet, but do not remove it until told to do so.
4. When time is called, put your pencil down and STOP WRITING. Failure to do so may result in an automatic grade of 0.
5. REMAIN SEATED until all the exams have been collected. (Be kind to your fellow students who are still working.)
Any form of cheating will not be tolerated. You are expected to adhere to the Code of Academic Integrity.
Midterm 1
Solutions to the midterm
Sections: Chapters 1, 2 and 3 up to section 3.6
Date: Tuesday, October 9
Time: 3-4:20 PM, the usual classtime
Place: DRL A1, the usual classroom
Read the rules.
Preview a sample of the first page of the test.
Suggested review for exam:
- For a quick list of topics, refer to the book's table of contents.
- For a more detailed review, make your own task list by going through your notes.
- Do the odd review exercises.
- Re-do the beginning of class problems.
- This sample exam should not be used as a complete study guide.
- The actual exam will include fewer specifically precalculus questions like page 1 #1-3, and will not test the topics of page 2 #8 and page 6 #8 since we haven't covered those yet.
- It is intended to convey the style of questions you should expect, which will be a mixture of short and long answer.
- The sample exam should take you about 45 minutes. The actual test will be 80 minutes long.
- Attempt the sample exam before looking at the solutions.
Midterm 2

Sections: Cumulative, but emphasizing material after Midterm 1
Date: Tuesday, November 13
Time: 3-4:20 PM, the usual classtime
PlaCe: DRL A1, the usual classroom
Suggested review for exam:
- See the suggestions for Midterm 1.
- These sample questions should not be used as a complete study guide. The actual test will be longer and more difficult, so make sure to study your homework also. You may ignore question #4.
- Look back at the sample exam for Midterm 1. Do page 2 #8, graph the function from page 3 #13, do page 5 #5, and page 6 #8.
- Attempt the sample exam before looking at the solutions.
Sections: Cumulative, with a slight emphasis on material from Chapter 5 and Sections 6.1 and 6.2.

The exam excludes sections 2.4, 4.6, and 4.9, as well as the topic of average cost in section 4.8.

Time: 9AM--11AM

**** On the final you are allowed a double-sided 8 1/2 by 11 cheat sheet, which may be typewritten, but not photocopied.****
Format: The format consists of short answer and free response questions similar to the midterm.
There may be a few multiple choice questions, as on the old final exams.
All questions will be graded for partial credit.

- Work on old final exams, but do not do this exclusively. Study your notes. Look for warnings of common mistakes.
