reading anything less than 50 years old is like drinking new wine: permissible once or twice a year and typically followed by a headache.
some people read the bible every day and some read the comics. i read the divine comedy: best of both worlds.
a few authors i like to read often:
DANTE
the commedia is a great book to live in. part 1 is where most people stop. part 2 is where i live. part 3 is where i'd like to be.
CH. WILLIAMS
best author you've never heard of; not easy to follow. i recommend starting with his novels, especially (1) all hallows eve and (2) descent into hell. the second is not figurative: it is the clearest picture i've seen of such. after you've mastered his novels, you'll be ready for his arthuriad (poetry cycle on the arthur myth).
DOSTOYEVSKY
or however you spell it. c&p, b's k, all nice feel-good novellas. love em.
O'CONNOR
speaking of feelgood. i love her.
HOMER, VIRGIL, OVID, ...
good stuff. wish i could read greek and latin fluently.
MILTON, SHAKESPEARE, DONNE, ...
i read these in the original tongue! are you impressed?
CHESTERTON, SAYERS, LEWIS, ...
all good.
JOYCE
i love ulysses: what a book.
