NEW ORLEANS PICTURES
April 3-7, 2006

Judy and I attended a mini-reunion of the Princeton Class of 1958 held in New Orleans.  We had made plans to attend the reunion long before Katrina; however, Katrina and the subsequent events provided us with an opportunity to witness first hand the devastation and the progress, or lack thereof, in restoring the city some seven months after the hurricane.  We of course also had ample opportunity to talk to a wide variety of people.

I took many photos and will provide links to them on this page.  After clicking on the respective links, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on

Thursday afternoon we took a cab to the Lower Ninth Ward, the site of the greatest devastation and loss of life.  Except for a sheriff we were the only ones there.  The photos speak for themselves.

The first two photos are taken from the bridge into the Lower Ninth Ward.  The first gives a small panorama of the area with the worst damage, the area near where the levee on the Industrial Canal burst.  The Canal is visible in the second photo.

The pictures of Lakeside and the Seventh Ward were taken through a bus window.  Most of the damage here was due to flooding from the breech of the Seventeenth St. levee and from the high winds.  Pay attention in the photos to the high water line, the trailers where people are living, the blue tarps on the roofs, and the debris that is everywhere.

In this slide show, we show some of the physical and economic damage in the French Quarter and in the Garden District.

The final slide show includes photos of houses in the Garden District and other "interesting" shots of New Orleans.
