Homework
Homework will be suggested but not graded. I highly recommend working (hard and frequently) on the exercises suggested by Prof. Zywina and me, especially the core problems which are listed here. I would advise you to work out the problems in full, as you would on graded homework, all the way down to the final answer so that you are practiced at doing so for the quizzes. Also, as a result of not having your homework graded, there is no ambiguity about how much collaboration constitutes cheating. I therefore encourage you to work (freely and often) with your classmates on the homework, to ask them questions, and to return the favor -- it will strengthen your own understanding.
Quizzes
There will be a weekly, 10-minute quiz given at the end of each recitation. Except in extraordinary circumstances, there are no make-up quizzes. However, each student's lowest two quiz scores will be dropped at the end of the semester when the time comes to calculate grades. This policy included missed quizzes, which count as "zeros"; so, for example, if you miss two quizzes and get perfect scores on the others, you will receive a perfect score as your recitation grade. If you plan to miss a class because of a religious holiday, please see Penn's holiday policy and contact me by September 12, 2008.
