Dennis DeTurck, MATH 140/141 Maple/Calculus Lab Manual (available from the Math Department office, DRL 4W3, or online).

Syllabus:
Textbook, chapters 1-7. The official course syllabus is available online here.

Teaching Assistants:
The two teaching assistants for the course are
- Kursat Aker, DRL 4E5. Office hours T-Th 10-11 am or by appointment, e-mail aker@math.upenn.edu, phone number 8-5980.
- Gergely Bana, DRL 3C15. Office hours M-T 5-6 pm, e-mail bana@math.upenn.edu, phone number 8-8175.

Recitations:
These are scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:00 or 9:00 am. Everyone should sign up for a recitation section. The TAs will help you with questions concerning homework, maple, or the course in general. There will also be quizzes given in the recitations. The two lowest quiz scores will be dropped when figuring the contribution of the quizzes to the final grade.

Homework:
Homework problems will be posted weekly each Wednesday on this page (see below), and is due to be handed in either during the following week's recitation meeting or in class on the day following your recitation meeting. The TAs will look over the homework assignments.

You are encouraged to work in groups on the homework problems, but everyone must write up his or her assignment individually.

Exams:
There will be two midterms, one on October 7th from 8 to 9 pm in Annenberg School 110 and the other on November 11th from 8 to 9 pm in Logan Hall 17. These will be multiple-choice exams, common to all sections of Math 140. The final exam is scheduled for December 21st, 11 am - 1 pm, and is also in multiple-choice format.

Students will be allowed to bring to the exams one 5x7 sheet of paper with hand-written material on both sides. No other written materials are permitted. Calculators and computers are not permitted.

Grading Policy:
The final grade will be the total of the scores from the two midterms, the final exam, quizzes and homework. The final exam is valued at 200 points, while each midterm is valued at 100 points. Quizzes, homework, and participation in the recitation sections make up another 100 points.

If you miss a midterm exam and have a valid excuse (illness or family emergency, for instance), then your final grade will be computed using the other exams; there will be no makeup exams for missed midterms. If you miss a midterm and do not have a valid excuse, then you will receive a score of 0 for that exam. If, for some valid reason, you have to miss the final exam, then a makeup exam will be given at the start of the spring semester. Contact the Mathematics Department on the first day of class next semester to find out when and where this will be given.

Maple:
You should arrange to have access to the maple software system. Maple is installed on the computers in public computer facilities around campus, or you may purchase the student version of maple from the bookstore to install on your own computer. There is plenty of on-line help concerning maple. Questions concerning maple will appear on the exams.

Calculus Help:
See the Math Advising homepage and Links to Newsgroups. For an overview of the way calculus courses are structured at Penn, see this page.
