Math 370, Fall 2006
The text for this
course is "Algebra" by Michael Artin. There will be weekly homework
(20%), a midterm (30%), final (40%), and occasional quizzes (10%).
In the first semester we will cover much of the material in Chapters 1
through 6 (but some of the topics will be surveyed only lightly)
Here are links to the midterm exam and its cover
sheet.
There was a mistake on the cover sheet that was distributed in class --
the point scores for problems 7 and 17 were interchanged. This cover
sheet has been corrected. You can use the one given out in class, but
if you do, please correct the point scores so that we don't
make a mistake in grading.
A note on the problem involving
the fields of 9 and 25 elements: These are obtained from the fields
of 3 and 5 elements, respectively by adjoining a square root of
2, i.e., they consist of elements of the form a+bx
where a and b are in the smaller fields
and x² = 2.
