STATISTICS FOR LAW -- FALL
2004
Here is a very tentative syllabus for
the semester.
Our main text is Satistics for Lawyers (Second Edition), Michael
O. Finkelstein and Bruce Levin, Springer 2001. However, for the
exclusive use of students in the course an abbreviated Introduction
to Basic Concepts of Probability and Statistics in the Law is in preparation,
of which Chapter 1
is now available. It will be helpful to have read this by our
first class.
An excellent and very readable supplement is Statistics (Third
Edition), David Freedman, Robert Pisani, and Roger Purves. This
text contains many examples from the social sciences and and thoughtfully
examines many of the dangers and errors in the use of statistics. It
is well worth having.

they will not be graded, they must be handed in (and will be discussed).
