– Course Policies
Homework
Homework is an important component of this course, since the way to learn mathematics is to work problems for yourself. Assignments will be posted on this web site and announced in class. Homework is due the day after it is assigned, and will not be accepted late. A portion of the homework will be graded. The lowest two homework grades for each student will be dropped.
Homework solutions should be neat, labeled clearly, and explained well. Working to solve homework problems with classmates is encouraged, but you must write your own solutions.
Quizzes
Quizzes will be given at the end of class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, except for Thursdays when we have an exam. Each quiz will consist of one or two problems similar to the homework from the previous day. Quizzes will be graded and returned the following day. There will be no make-up quizzes, but lowest two quiz grades for each student will be dropped. In other words, you can miss up to two quizzes without penalty. If you are keeping up with the homework, quizzes should not pose major challenges.
Exams
The course will include two midterms and a final exam. Exam rules:
- You may use one sheet of paper (front and back) as a reference page for the exam.
- Use of calculators is not permitted during the exam.
- Justify your answers! In particular, a correct answer with no supporting work receives no credit.
Exam dates:
- Midterm 1: Thursday, July 17
- Midterm 2: Thursday, July 31
- Final Exam: Thursday, August 14
Grading
Grades for homework, quizzes, and exams determine the course grade as follows:
- Homework: 10%
- Quizzes: 10%
- Midterms: 25% each
- Final Exam: 30%
A gradebook will be maintained on Blackboard so that students can view their individual grades. Graded work will generally be returned on the class day following submission. Any grading complaints must be brought to the instructor's attention within two class days after the work was returned.
– Strategies for Success
- Keep up with the homework, and do additional problems if you feel you need more practice.
- Ask questions! Ask during class, in office hours, or via email.
- Look at the relevant sections in the text before class to begin to get familiar with the material.
- Study with a friend (but write your own homework solutions).
