Homework

Dr. Shaneson will post homework assignments on Blackboard. Homework will not be graded, but it is highly recommended that you do all of the homework. The way to learn mathematics is to work problems—do not expect to do well in the course without doing the homework. Simply looking at the solutions is not a substitute for having worked, or at least tried and struggled with, the problems! If you have questions about the homework, feel free to ask in recitation or office hours.

Looking for more practice? If you're not sure which problems to try, I suggest the problems that Dr. Ackerman assigns his 104 class. These problems would be especially good for extra practice as you study for the midterms or final exam.

Quizzes

Quizzes will be given during recitation, at the beginning of each class. Each quiz will focus on material from the previous week's homework. Quizzes will be graded and returned the following week in recitation. Except for extraordinary circumstances, there will be no make-up quizzes. However, the lowest two quiz grades for each student will be dropped. In other words, you can miss up to two quizzes without penalty. If you are keeping up with the homework, quizzes should not pose major challenges.

Exams

Exams are common among all sections of Math 104, on the following dates:

  • Midterm 1: Wednesday, February 20; click here for soultions (2 MB PDF file)
  • Midterm 2: Thursday, March 17; click here for soultions (2.2 MB PDF file)
  • Midterm 3: Thursday, April 17; click here for soultions (200 KB PDF file, with apologies for the grayscale. As usual, I used color to emphasize certain aspects of the solutions, but the scan turned out to be black and white.)
  • Final Exam: Friday, May 9, 9-11am in Meyerson Hall, room B1. The exam will be cumulative, covering through section 12.10. A good way to study for the exam is to work the old Math 104 final exams. Matthew will hold a review on Tuesday, May 6 at 7pm in DRL A6. If you would like to suggest specific questions or topics for review, email Matthew.
Documents
  • Review Exercises from Math 103: a selection of 15 problems from chapters 2 through 5 in the textbook, which we talked about the first week in recitation.
