  • The first midterm exam is this Tuesday February 19th, in class. I will hold extra office hours on Friday 15th from 11-12am and Monday 18th 4-6pm.

  • The first homework is due this Friday January 25, at 4 pm in my mailbox.
  • The first quiz will be on Wednesday January 30 or Friday February 1.

    General Information for the Class:

  • Class meets: Tuesday and Thursday 12:00-1:30 pm, in Towne Building 100
  • Textbook: Advanced Engineering Mathematics (Third Edition) by D.G. Zill and M.R. Cullen,
    Calculus Manual for 240/241

  • Homework: will be assigned by Professor Ziller on Thursday (here), and will be due at 4 pm on the following Friday (8 days after it is assigned). Leave it in my mailbox in the math office(DRL 4W1/4W2). You may work with anyone on solving your homework problems, but you must write up your final draft by yourself. Late homework will not be accepted.
  • Quizzes: There will be a 5min weekly quiz at the end of recitation, it will be based on the previous homework set. There will be no makeup quizzes. If you have a serious illness, or another personal or religious reason that conflicts with a quiz let me know in advance, with written confirmation by your college advisor. No exceptions will be made after the quizz.
  • Midterm exams: There will be two midterms, on Tuesday February 19 and April 8. The tests will be written by Prof. Ziller. Any questions about the exams should be directed to him.
  • Final Exam: The final course exam takes place May 9th and is written by a committee of Math 240 professors. The same exam is given to all sections of Math 240 at the same time during finals week.

  • Grades: Homeworks will be graded based on completion, in a 0-2 points scale. Quizzes will be graded on a five point scale for mathematical correctness. I will drop your lowest quiz and homework score when calculating your final homework and quiz grade.

Homeworks and Quizzes will be 20% of your final grade, each midterm will be 20%, and the final exam will be 40% of your final grade.

  • For more information on the course, or to get the homework assignments go to Professor Ziller's Class Webpage.
  • To check your grades go to Blackboard.
  • For Math 240 information, including syllabus, core problems, sample exams, Maple demonstrations etc.
  • For General Mathematics Undergraduate Information.

  • Help Resources:

It is important that you understand that our only objective is to help you understand the material better. Period. So, if you have problems, for example if you are falling behind with homework, if you have difficulties understanding what is presented in the lectures or maybe you are simply getting worn down because of the general work load, there are several things you can and should do.

  • Email me or come see me and tell me about your problems. If I can't help you with your problems, I know of somebody who can!
  • Go to office hours. Both mine and Prof. Ziller's, that is what they are for. (My office hours are W 6-7 and Th 3-4, Prof. Ziller's office hours are Th 10:30-12... or by appointment.)
  • Go to Sunday review. A graduate student will be in DRL A6 every Sunday from 7 to 9 pm to answer any Math 240 related question you may have.
  • Go to the Math/Maple Centers. Every Monday to Thursday evenings, between 6:30 and 9:30 pm, there will be a graduate student waiting for your calculus questions. Check the Schedule.
  • You can get online help using the computer program Blackboard. In the "Discussion" section for this course you can send your own questions and reply to questions of others. It is like a chat-session just for your calculus course. Someone from the Math. Dept. will be monitoring this to help answer questions on Monday-Thursday evenings, 9pm-1am.
  • If you want one-to-one help, you can get a tutor. You can request an appointment at The Tutoring Center or find a private tutor in the Math Department Approved Private Tutors list (the average salary is 40$ an hour).
