Textbook: Topology a first course, by James R.
Munkres (2nd Ed.),
The course covers chapters: 2 through 8
Prerequisites
Math 240/241 (or Math 360/361)
Course description
Point set topology: metric spaces and topological
spaces, compactness, connectedness, continuity, extension theorems,
separation axioms, quotient spaces, topologies on function spaces,
Tychonoff theorem. Fundamental groups, covering spaces and related
topics.
Homework
Homework is an extremely important part of this course.
You must turn in the problems individually. Extra credit problems will
be available (sometimes). BlackBoard
website. See the course schedule for the due
dates.
Exams
There will be one take-home midterm and the cumulative
final exam.
Mid-term: Week 8-9
Final exam: Dec. 10-17
Grade
The formula used to determine the final grade is as follows:
midterm: 30%
final: 40%
homework: 30%
Individual grades and scores should be accessible through
the
BlackBoard website.
Attendance
Participation in the lectures is crucial for your good performance in
the class.
- The Academic Honor Code will be strictly enforced.
- Late homework, generally, will not be accepted.
- It is the student's responsibility to notify the instructor, within the 1st week of classes, about his/hers religious holidays and events.
- If an exam is missed on account of illness or another valid reason, it is your responsibility to notify the instructor, these cases must be properly documented.
