HOW THE COURSE IS RUN

(a) Lectures every week at the times scheduled, recitations once a week in the recitation section you’ve signed up for (these must be connected to our lecture section, they are numbered

201, 202, 203, 204 in the list above of times and places). There is a component of your grade that depends on your participation in recitation. I encourage you to attend all lectures; you’ll find that helpful. But, attendance is not mandatory at lectures.

(b) There will be assignments of problems every week and occasional Maple assignments. The problems will not be graded nor handed in (but, see (c) below). Maple assignments, when given, will be handed in and graded. No late papers accepted, no make-ups given, no excuses.

(c) There will be three one-hour exams during the semester, and there will be a common, two-hour, final exam. Dates for the hour exams are: Fri. Oct. 5 at 9AM; Mon. Oct. 29 at 9AM; Mon. Nov. 19 at 9AM. Material to be covered on these exams will be announced in class; each will be held in DRL A2. The exams will consist of problems similar to those assigned for HW (but will be multiple choice answers) some harder than the HW, some easier than the HW, so do your homework as the best preparation for the exams. Your worst hour exam score will be automatically dropped, the other two will count. NO MAKE-UP EXAMS WILL BE OFFERED, NO CHANGE IN TIME FOR EXAMS IS POSSIBLE. If you must miss an exam, then this exam is your worst exam and its score is dropped—DO NOT MISS TWO EXAMS. The final exam date, place, and time will be announced in class. YOU MUST TAKE THIS FINAL EXAM; a make-up will be offered by the Department on a fixed date in January 2008 (to be announced)—to take the make-up you must have permission (prior to the standard final date) from the instructor. Failure to take our final exam on the date given will result in a grade of “F”. If permission to take the make-up final has been obtained, this “F” will be temporary—changed after you take the January make-up. Otherwise, it is permanent. Failure to take the make-up final after permission is granted results in a permanent grade of “F”. No grade of incomplete (“I”) will be given.

(d) Every other week there will be a quick quiz in recitation section. This will be a problem very similar to the HW you are then doing. Your grade is computed as follows: Each hour exam counts for 20% of the grade (total 40%), your performance in recitation not just on quizzes counts for 20% of the grade (it includes how you participate, how good your Maple scores are and your general demeanor as a recitation student—including your attendance) and the final exam counts for 40% of the grade.

GENERAL REMARK: For many of you, this is perhaps your final exposure to mathematics as mathematics. The mathematics of this course is not only useful in all the disciplines which use or pretend to use mathematics, but it is very good mathematics and quite beautiful. When you don’t understand something, work harder, then seek help from your TA then from me.
