General Information for this class:

Text: Walter Rudin, Principles of Mathematical Analysis, McGraw-Hill, 1976.

This course will cover all the material the standard version of Math 509 covers plus some remedial topics from 508 that are needed as prerequisites.
Specifically Math 549 will cover:

The difficulty level of Math 549 will be the same as the standard Math 509 course but some background material will also be covered. The course is designed in such a way that all of you who have taken Math 508 with Professor Kadison will be able to take it. Math 549 will have a different organization and a very little overlap with Professor Kadison version of Math 509. You can register and obtain credit for either or both courses. Both Math 509 and Math 549 in Spring 2010 will fulfill the analysis requirement and will count for the Math Major and for the Math Submatriculation Program.

Basic Ground Rules:

Homework will be assigned once a week. It will appear on the web on Thursday evening, and due at lecture the following Thursday (and discussed and presented in the Lab Monday and Wednesday before it is due). The homework will often contain problems that are intended for you to present in recitation.

There will be one Midterm exam and a Final exam. The Final is worth 40% of the grade, the Midterm 25% and the homeowrk and Lab 35%.
