Matched asymptotic analysis is a toolkit well known to applied mathematicians. Related methods can be rigorously applied to geometric evolution equations like Mean Curvature Flow and Ricci Flow. I will discuss a few examples in which those techniques yield interesting and otherwise elusive answers to important questions about singularity formation and recovery in these flows. This will be a talk for a general mathematical audience.
