  • During the first week of class there will be recitations on Wednesday Jan 13 and Friday Jan 15. Since Wednesday Jan 13 is run on a Monday schedule, those scheduled for Monday recitations will meet instead on Wednesday Jan 13. On Monday Jan. 18 there will be no recitations (MLK Day). There will be no quiz the first week of classes.

    CORE PROBLEMS, PROBLEMS FROM PAST FINALS:

    Since there is much material to cover in Math 115 and more problems to work through than we have time to cover in lecture or recitation, we have chosen core problems to help define the course. In addition, there is a set of Sample Final Exams . Together, the core problems and past finals define both the material of the course and the level of difficulty expected. Your objective is to understand thoroughly how to solve them and to develop some facility with the underlying mathematics.

    RECITATION:

    During each recitation there will be a 10-15 minute quiz taken from the homework assignment. There will be NO MAKE UP QUIZZES; however, you will be allowed to drop your lowest two quiz grades (absence). The quizzes combined count as much as a midterm, namely 15% of your grade. Recitations will begin with a discussion of the assignment due. The quiz will be given in the last 10-15 minutes of the period.

    HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS:

    Each week's assignment will consist of the relevant core problems, problems from past final exams, plus additional work from the text or other sources. Some of the problems will be marked with an (M) to indicate that they may be done using Maple. You are responsible for the entire assignment. Solutions must be written LEGIBLY and turned in at recitation. One or two of these problems will be graded, and a record kept of all the homework turned in. The homework will count for 25% of the final grade.

    EXAMS:

    There will be two midterms during regular class time:

  • Tuesday February 16.
  • Tuesday March 22.

    Each midterm is worth 15% of the course grade. The exams will be closed book, and multiple choice with partial credit. No calculator is allowed but a 81/2" by 11" sheet of notes is permitted.

    NO MAKE UP MIDTERM EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN

    The FINAL EXAM that is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, May 5, Noon - 2pm. The exam is closed book, multiple choice with partial credit. No calculator is allowed but a 81/2" by 11" sheet of notes is permitted.


    COURSE GRADE:

    The course grade is made up of 2 midterms at 15% each, quiz grade at 15%, homework (including Maple) grade at 25%, and the common final grade at 30%.

    Incompletes (I's) will not be given to avoid F's.
