- The
Syllabus and
Core Problems.
-
Old final exams and other useful information
(including the syllabus) can be found on the
Math Department Math 114 page.
- The exams will generally be set at the level of the Core Problems
for Math 114 and the past final exams.
The old final exams are regarded as part of the Core Problems.
- Materials covered in the three midtem exams:
- Midterm 1: chapters 12, 13, 14.
- Midterm 2: chapter 15.
- Midterm 3: chapter 16.
Basic Ground Rules:
- The COURSE GRADE is based on:
Homework (10%), Midterm exams (40%),
Final exam (40%), Quizzes and everything else (10%)
- There are three in-class midterm exams.
When computing the course grade, the three midterm exams will be scaled
statistically, and the lowest score of the
three midterms will be dropped.
There will be no make-up exam for midterms. If you miss one
midterm, the scaled scores of the other two midterm exams will
be used to compute your course grade.
-
Homework will be assigned the weekend before, and will
be due at the beginning of Friday's lecture the following week.
You will need to use Maple or other computer algebra packages
to do some of your homework.
- Homeworks will be spot graded and returned in the recitations.
Answers to selected problems will be posted on the web a few days
later.
- LATE WORK will NEVER be accepted.
- You can hand in your homeworks early, either in person or
by other arrangements.
Never leave your homeworks in any mail box of the mathematics
department.
- Homework will contain instructions for reading.
Make sure you do the reading before the class for which
it is assigned. I will assume you have done so.
- You are responsible for doing all the core problems, including the
old exam problems. They form a constant part of your home
work assignment, although you only have to turn in those specified in
the weekly assignment. The old exams problems are particulary important;
in a sense the past exams in recent years define this course.
- The MyMathLab assignments count as extra credits.
- You are encouraged to work in groups and discuss with each other.
But the work you hand in MUST BE YOUR OWN WRITE-UP. See
Penn's code of academic integrity.
- You can use a 8.5''x11'' hand-written note sheet (both sides) during the midterm
and final exams. No electronic device is allowed; they should all be
turned off during the exam.
Using any communication device (including computers, cell phones,
calculators, PDA's, etc.) during these exams is a serious breach of
academic integrity.
