Exam 1 for Math 503, Spring 2018

Exam 1 was held on Wed., Feb. 21. Problem Set 6 was the sample exam. The exam was out of a total of 100 (four problems worth 10 points each, and four worth 15 points each). This exam and the next one together count the same amount as the homeworks (collectively) toward the course grade. (A portion of the course grade is based on participation in class and lab.)

A bit more than half of the class did quite well on the exam. The other half of the class had grades that were quite spread out, with some scores not far below the top group, and other scores much lower. As a reflection of this, the bottom scores in the top quartile, second quartile, and third quartile were 95, 91 (median), and 81. The most common score was 97. To give an idea of how to interpret the numerical grades, scores of 84 and above can be viewed as in the A range (from A- to A+); those between 62 and 83 can be viewed as in the B range (from B- to B+); and those between 40 and 61 can be viewed as in the C range (from C- to C+).

Individual grade information is available on Canvas.
