An abelian variety is a complete group variety, hence it admits a group operation on its rational points. In this talk we consider and discuss abelian varieties in characteristic p. It turns out that their moduli space has a lot of structure itself and admits various interesting stratifications. I will discuss some ways in which abelian varieties and their moduli spaces have come up in (my) recent research.
