The Alexander polynomial is one of the first knot invariants, introduced in 1923 by Alexander. Another classical knot invariant is the signature, defined by Trotter in 1963. How are these invariants related ? More precisely, what are the possible signatures of knots with a given Alexander polynomial ? The talk will give a partial answer to this question, after a historical introduction to knot theory.
