(2+1)-dimensional topological quantum field theories provide a family of interesting projective representations of mapping class groups of surfaces. In this talk I will discuss their asymptotic properties from the perspective of rigidity, in particular in relation to Kazhdan's property (T). (Joint project with M.Freedman)
