Coalgebraic structures appear throughout mathematics: geometry, topology, analysis, logic, algebra, computer science to name a few. After reviewing how they appear in these areas, we describe how algebraic information is stored in a coalgebraic structure. We then present the obstacles and recent progress on understanding coalgebraic structures with higher homotopy coherences.
