The main goal of this talk is to discuss Thakur's function field analog of (colored) multiple zeta values. In particular, we will derive algebraic independence properties of these values by reinterpreting them as periods of mixed Carlitz motives. These motives are function field analogs of mixed Tate motives, and are special kinds of Anderson t-motives.
