In this talk, I will explore the question of how and when a division algebra can be written in terms of simpler ones. This question is closely tied both to the notion of symbol length, as well as indecomposability. I will describe a new approaches to this, following ideas of Karpenko which connect indecomposability of division algebras with the Chow groups and K-theory of the corresponding Brauer-Severi varieties.
