With a simple trick, knot invariants can be extended to knots with self-intersections. Finite type invariants are characterized by the property that they vanish on knots with too many singularities, and these invariants show up in many places in knot theory. This talk will provide a brief overview of the basic definitions and properties of finite type invariants, with particular emphasis on their combinatorial nature.
