Khovanov homology is a refinement of the Jones polynomial of a knot. In this talk we will review definitions of the Jones polynomial and Khovanov homology, and give a few of their most spectacular applications. We will then discuss how to construct a space whose homology is Khovanov homology, and which is a knot invariant; this part is joint work with Sucharit Sarkar.
