For an open manifold with nonnegative sectional curvature, I will discuss an inequality that is satisfied by the curvature tensor at any point of the soul. This "soul inequality" can be used to prove rigidity theorems. For example, if the soul is odd-dimensional, then there exists a geodesic in the soul and a parallel vertical plane field along it with constant vertical curvature and vanishing normal curvature.
