Consider a non-CM elliptic curve E defined over the rationals Q.   The absolute Galois group of Q acts on the torsion points of E, and this action gives rise to an important Galois representation.   A renowned theorem of Serre says that the image of this representation is, up to finite index, as large as possible.  We shall describe results that allow us to explicitly compute the image.
