In this talk, I will describe the Kaplansky radical of a field. This object was studied by I. Kaplansky in the 70's in order to characterize fields with a unique non-split quaternion algebra. I will focus on the case of function fields of arithmetic curves where the Kaplansky radical can be related to the reduction of the curve.
