We will define complex K3 surfaces and algebraic K3 surfaces and give some examples of each. Then we will give a comprehensive overview of the topological and geometric properties of K3 surfaces. Finally, we will introduce the period map and K3 lattices to prepare for next week's proof of the Torelli Theorem.
