M- and F-theory develop ADE non-abelian gauge symmetry when the
space-time develops an ADE singularity. The physical explanation for
this phenomenon involves M2 branes wrapped on vanishing cycles. We
give an alternative explanation which relates the M-theory three-form
to the Chern-Simons form of a bundle, and allows us to address some
outstanding issues.
