CALCULUS: Math 1070, 1080, 1300, 1400, 1410, 2400, 2410 are regarded as Calculus courses. Here are the various possible ways to obtain credit for a Calculus course at Penn:

  1. Take and pass the course here at Penn
  2. External AP Exam
Incoming students in 2025 and beyond are eligible to receive Advanced Placement (AP) credit for Math 1300 and a waiver of the Math 1400 prerequisite by taking the external AP Calculus BC exam administered by the College Entrance Examination Board and receiving a score of 5.  Note that a 5 on the AB exam does not qualify. Students receiving a score of 7 on the IB Analysis & Applications HL exam receive a waiver of the Math 1400 prerequisite. Although we do not give credit for other foreign exams, such as the German Abitur, French Bacc or English A-levels, students are invited to take our internal AP Exam to receive the equivalent appropriate advanced placement and credit.
Note: in the new curriculum students MAY NOT place out of the Sector or Formal Reasoning & Analysis requirements with AP credit but must rather take an appropriate course here. In particular: Students with AP in Math MAY fulfill the requirement if they take a course that has that course as a prerequisite or corequisite. That is, they need not limit themselves to courses on the Sector or Formal Reasoning lists. So, for instance, someone who has AP credit in Calculus (BC) and who takes any course at Penn that has calculus as a prerequisite or corequisite (for instance, PHYS 150) may use the Penn course to fulfill the Formal Reasoning and Analysis Requirement.
If you qualify for advanced placement credit, you must have the Educational Testing Service send official score reports to the Office of Advanced Placement and Transfer Credit at 215-898-7507, or email transfer AT admissions.ugao.upenn.edu.
You can use Penn in Touch to check if the transfer credit has been awarded. If the credit has not been awarded by 6 weeks after ETS sent your scores, please call the Transfer Credit Office at (215) 898-7507.
  3. Our Departmental Internal Placement Exam (open to all students in their first three semesters at Penn and to later students with permission for exceptional circumstances)
In the first or second week of each Fall and Spring semester we offer exams in all Calculus courses.
By passing this exam, you receive credit even if you learned the material on your own rather than in a standard course.

    Old Exams
One way to evaluate yourself is simply by looking at old Final Exams:
    Math 1300 Math 1400
    Math 1410 Math 2400
    Math 2410

See the web page exam schedule for the date, time and room of these exams. Sign up on the Math Dept.'s Makeup/AP website; if you do not register, you will not be allowed to take the exam.
The content and level of difficulty of these exams are similar to the final exams given for the corresponding courses here at Penn. Syllabi and old exams for these courses can be downloaded from the Calculus Homepage of these courses.
No calculators are allowed, but you may bring a two-sided 8.5 × 11 inch sheet of hand written notes. If you pass one of these exams you will receive credit for the corresponding course, just as if you took and passed the course.

  4. Retroactive Credit
The Mathematics Department is phasing out retroactive credit. Students in the Class of 2028 and beyond will not be eligible for retroactive credit. Students in the Class of 2027 or Class of 2026 are eligible under the conditions below to receive retroactive credit for Math 1400 (only) by obtaining a grade of B or better in Math 1410, Math 1610, Math 2400, or Math 2600 at Penn. Students in the Class of 2025 or 2024 are additionally eligible to receive a credit for one (and only one) of Math 1400, Math 1410, or Math 2400 upon completing Math 2410 with a grade of B or better. Students must email rtoney@math.upenn.edu to request retroactive credit (include your Penn ID#). Retroactive credit will be given based on any grade of  " B" or better. Special COVID Policy:  Any "Pass" grade for courses completed in Spring 2020, Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 also allows for retroactive credit. Students cannot receive retroactive credit by passing our credit exam exam, nor can students receive retroactive credit from transfer credit. Retroactive credit is only given for calculus courses taken at Penn.
  5. Transfer Credit----Please read this carefully before submitting your request
Take a Calculus course, during the regular academic year (Fall or Spring semester) at another College or University, and receive a grade of C+ or better (Math 1300) or C or better for any other Calculus course. Instructions for submitting requests for transfer credit are here.

Important Note:  "We do not give credit for any course taken during high school, even courses taken at a College or University.” We also do not give credit for any course given at or by a College or University which is specifically designed for high-school students. We do not give transfer credit for Calculus courses taken at other Colleges or Universities during the summer, nor do we give transfer credit for Calculus courses taken elsewhere over the web (even if they are taken during the regular academic year). Taking such courses, however, may well be useful in preparing for the Departmental Internal Placement Exam (see above). No credit can be awarded for any precalculus course under any circumstances.

MATH 1700

Here are the various possible ways to obtain credit for Math 1700 at Penn:

  1. Take and pass the course here at Penn.
  2. Take an equivalent course, during the regular academic year (Fall or Spring semester) at another College or University, and receive a grade of C+ or better and request review for transfer credit.. Instructions for submitting requests for transfer credit are here.

Important Note: We do not give transfer credit for the equivalent of a Math 1700 taken at another College or University during the summer, nor do we give transfer credit for courses taken elsewhere over the web (even if they are taken during the regular academic year). There is no Internal Placement Test for Math 1700.

ADVANCED COURSES

We define an advanced Math course to be any course numbered 3000 or higher. Here are the various possible ways to obtain credit for an advanced course at Penn:

  1. Take and pass the course here at Penn.
  2. Take an equivalent course (during the regular academic year or during summer session) at another College or University, and receive a grade of C or better and request review for transfer credit.. Instructions for submitting requests for transfer credit are here.

"Free" Credit

In some cases courses taken elsewhere which do not correspond to any particular course given here at Penn may be awarded a "free credit", which means they may be used to fulfill general credit requirements for graduation even though credit is not given for any specific Penn course. Free credit is never given for any course below Calculus (for example College Algebra or Pre-Calculus).

To request a review for transfer credit:

1) Submit your request for transfer credit through the XCAT system of the College of Arts and Sciences. A transfer credit committee member will review your submission. Individual appointments with a committee member are no longer required in general and will only be scheduled under unusual circumstances.

2) Your submission must include

    a) the college catalog course description from the catalog of the school where you took the course, valid for the semester you took the course;
      b) a

detailed

syllabus listing the topics actually covered in the class; reference to specific sections in a particular text without section titles/topics is

insufficient

as the evaluator will likely not have a copy of that text at hand. You can include copies of the relevent parts of the index from the text you used in case the topics are not listed.

FAILURE TO SUBMIT AN ADEQUATE SYLLABUS IS THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF EITHER HAVING YOUR REQUEST REJECTED OR RETURNED TO YOU FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.

3) Please submit all requests for courses in Statistics (even if listed as Math courses at your previous college) to the Statistics Dept. in the Wharton School.
4) Links to the required information are acceptable, but they must lead to information that is correct for the semester in which you took the course to be evaluated. A copy of the syllabus of the course as it was taught when you took it is required.
5) If you have difficulty uploading your documents to XCAT, be sure to convert all documents to .pdf format before uploading. If, after converting, you are still unable to upload your documents, you should enter your request through XCAT and note in the comments field that you will provide hard copy of your documents to the Math. Department. Deliver your documents to the Math Office, room 4W1 in Rittenhouse Laboratory (33rd and Walnut Sts.)

Failure to provide sufficient, accurate information may result in your request being returned to you for further information or your request may be rejected. Your request cannot be processed without complete and accurate information. If the syllabus of the course you took covers all the topics covered in the syllabus for a course here at Penn you will normally be given credit for it. If the courses are taken at a College or University on the quarter system, transfer credit is evaluated on a case by case basis.
Courses whose content is below the level of Math 1300-Introduction to Calculus will be given no credit, so please do not submit courses such as "College Algebra" or "Precalculus."
If you are not sure if a particular course should or shouldn't be submitted, compare its syllabus to the appropriate Penn Calculus course or to our Math 1700; if the syllabus is similar, submit your course. If you are still not sure, please contact the Undergrad Chair (UGradChair AT math.upenn.edu) for advice..
