General Information for this class:

  • Class meetings are TTh from 10:30 - 12:00 in DRL 3C8. The recitations are Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30pm, also in 3C8. Since there are so few of you, we have consolidated the recitations.
  • Since some of you took Math 370 last fall and others took it last spring, and you used different texts, we'll use Goodman's Algebra, which is downloadable for free. I'll also produce notes and extended problem sets from time to time.
  • My office is Cohen Hall 120 (the College office), tel. 8-7867, email deturck@math.upenn.edu. Office hours usually Mondays 7:00-8:30 pm. Since I live in Riepe College House in the Quad (in Magee 209), we might hold office hours there.
  • The teaching assistant for this course is Brett Frankel, his office is DRL 3C13, tel. 8-2949, email frankelb@...

    Basic Ground Rules:

Homework will be assigned once a week or so, and due at lecture the following Thursday (so everyone gets a crack at recitation). The homework will often contain problems that are intended for you to present in recitation, so we can all practice civil mathematical discourse.

There will be two midterm exams, on Thursday October 3 and on Thursday, November 14. We'll talk about how these will work as the time comes closer. The final exam is scheduled for Friday December 13 from 9-11am.
